Elder Abuse - Born To LoseRelease Date: TBARecord Label: State Of Mind RecordingsReviewer: Chris Gates

Elder Abuse brings us a rather honest brand of punk rock in its latest EP Born to Lose, showcasing its influences in an all-encompassing brand of punk rock. Formed by members of various other bands – most notably drummer Dan Donald, formerly of Daggermouth – they present us with a collection of songs that pull from influences throughout the genre.
Tropical Song kicks off the EP and immediately greets you with the raspy, emotional vocals that are a trademark of this band. These are mixed, at times, with pockets of catchy harmonies that show how these guys can appeal to a wide spectrum of the pop/punk crowd. Lyrics like “I’m better off alone,” and “At least I fucking tried,” are the preview of what to expect as the EP progresses.
Rex Manning Day continues the emotionally-charged lyricism asking, “Will we still be friends?” And exclaiming “I’m praying for a different ending,” before hitting with a hard change of pace to wrap things up. The EP definitely sets the tone of letting go and saying goodbye to things in your life, only to come full circle by basically throwing up the middle finger in Winnipeg Sucks and then extending to us a more nostalgic look at things with See Ya Later, Moondog.
Elder Abuse lists influences anywhere from hardcore types to pop/punk and everywhere in between. That all-encompassing attitude is clear on Born to Lose. From tempo changes and guitar lines, to group vocals and drum fills, there’s a little bit of everything on this EP that a fan of punk rock can enjoy.
A pit moving song like Worst Case Ontario comes right after the catchy Beige Pants Were A Bad Idea, full of simple, melodic harmonies. Rather refreshingly, these guys forego the fluff and let their music do the talking.
Elder Abuse has a bright future and it will be interesting to see which way their music trends in the future. For now, enjoy Born To Lose and fulfill your taste of all things punk rock.
